Resetting the PRAM and SMC on a MacBook

Resetting the PRAM (Parameter RAM) is generally the initial triage of any issue on a Mac. The PRAM is mostly the core essentials for getting your mac to start, and then operate.
Here’s how to reset your PRAM:
  • 1.Shut down your machine. Once the machine is completely shut down, press the power button and then press command-alt-p-r. You have to make sure you get those keys pressed before the grey screen comes up or it won’t work.
  • 2.Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you here the startup chime.
  • 3.Let go of the keys and let your Mac reboot normally.
When you log back in, you may have to adjust your mouse speed, time and date/timezone, and a few other things, but otherwise you should be good to go.

The System Management Controller stores/manages/controls a lot more interesting things than the PRAM:
Fans

Lights (including keyboard backlight)
Power
System Performance

  • 5.Put the battery back in and reconnect the MagSafe cord
  • 6.Turn your machine back on with the power button

For MacBook Pros, MacBook Airs, and MacBooks where you can’t remove the battery on your own, here’s what you do:
